Cons, Comics, and Monsters

... latest in all the SADCAT news ...

So, few things to comment on!

First off, I had an awesome time at the Ottawa Comiccon. I know a few people I've met online stopped by, so if you watch me here--IT WAS GREAT MEETING YOU! It was packed for a relatively new convention, and I saw some amazing cosplays and stunning artwork (which I spent probably too much of my con earnings on but this is to be expected). I've booked my table for next year and am excited to do it again!

Next on the agenda... DO YOU LOVE MONSTERS? I KNOW YOU MUST LOVE MONSTERS TO SOME DEGREE IF YOU WATCH ME. I've tried in the past to throw together a creature-y art group here on DA, but kept digging myself into holes I couldn't get out of when I made the infrastructure 100% based on me doing absolutely everything and then I would keel over from exhaustion-related death after a week. So I've been thinking about how to make it work for aaaages (stalking a few popular RP and design groups to see how they survived) and have now tried again!

Basically it's an RP-style OC creation group. Make monsters, train monsters, upgrade monsters! Eventually breed and evolve monsters. There's also the option to refine your own Keeper OC. All set inside a fantasy world. And as the designing is up to the members (because honestly that's just more fun anyway), all I really have to do is roll out challenges and update the member list (but I'll definitely be participating with my own OCs).

It's got that fresh-group smell, but I'd love feedback to make it better. I'm also open to adding a couple experienced mods/co-founders to help shape this thing and make it super crazy awesome.

In the meantime, check it out! If it tickles your design fancy, I'd be delighted to have you join.

AND FINALLY, The Awakened. Yup, I'm still at it. Con prep had me in its clutches for a few weeks there, as well as my studio starting onto its very first feature film (SO EXCITING AHHH), but I'll be devoting some of this Victoria Day long weekend to the next page and should hopefully have it up soon.

Wading through 800+ messages as I return to Internet life and this strange concept of "drawing for funsies". Noooow, page 8, where were we...

001. Introduction
So I've had ZERO time for anything lately. I'm working day shifts AND night shifts at the studio and teaching at an art school on weekends, effectively working four different jobs, so I only really get home to sleep and feed my poor lonely cats. I miss drawing so damn much, so I forced myself to do this during whatever few minutes I could snatch: Lovely Frigga, introducing Loki to Thor.

It's that age-old 100 Themes Challenge that I am going to exclusively dedicate to fan art. And as we'll be wrapping up the production that is currently supplying me with two of my extra jobs, I should have time to actually dedicate to my own projects again soon!

In the meantime, HAVE SOME CUTE!

Hello! I absolutely adore all of your artwork and your appealing style!

I have to ask though: How do get such clean lines in your work? (I mean the digital, not traditional) Are those actual pencils lines you color in? Is there a special Photoshop brush you use, or do you use the Basic Brushes?

Hey! Thanks very much. ^^

I use a few different brushes for lineart, depending on the feel I'm going for. For really smooth lines I use a brush set I bought yeeeears ago (unfortunately I can't find the website now), but it's not hugely different from the inking brushes in Kyle's Ultimate Megapack (, which are the brushes I use for most everything else (when I'm going for a more pencil-y look, like this: I use his Gouache a Go Go brush). A lot of the smoothness comes from working at a high DPI (never less than 400), being very quick with my movements, and rotating the canvas a LOT as I go so my hand is always moving at the angle of least resistance. Wearing some soft fingerless gloves can also improve the smoothness of your hand movements on a tablet, and for extra long lines the pen tool is your best friend. ;D

Hope that's somewhat helpful!

Hello, just popping in out of curiosity - any news on when the cupcake scene of Awakened will be continuing?
Dying to see how Monty's wake goes :)

With luck--this Monday. The feature film our studio's been working on is starting to wrap up, and I managed to put a bit of a dent into the next page last weekend. I'm desperately hoping I can just put my apartment on lockdown this weekend and do nothing but COMIC. ;P
